The Blue Mountains dojo is part of Aikido NSW, which is affiliated with Aiki Kai (Australia), which is in turn recognized by the Aiki-Kai Foundation and the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Aiki-Kai (Australia) is the only Australian Aikido organization with membership of the International Aikido Federation.
Aiki-Kai (Australia) was formed in 1965. Its originator, Sugano Shihan, 8th Dan, was a live-in student (uchi-deshi) of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (known as O-Sensei).
The intention of the instruction is to faithfully pass on the Aikido teaching of Sugano sensei, in classes conducted in the manner of Sugano sensei. Classes consist of a mix of the standard Aikido grading techniques (and variations), as well as techniques and ‘pattern practice’ with jo (staff), bokken (wooden sword) and tanto (knife).
Students practicing at the Blue Mountains dojo are welcome to practice at other Aiki-Kai dojos, and participate in the Aiki-Kai twice-annual national training schools. The nearest other Aiki-Kai dojos are at Sydney Olympic Park, Granville and Seven Hills.
