Progress of the individual is recognised by a grading system. Tests for kyu grades (5 levels) are conducted twice per year by the New South Wales Area Representative, and assess performance of a range of basic techniques.

Dan gradings (black belt) are conducted twice annually at the national training schools.
Dan certificates are internationally recognised and issued from Hombu. (world headquarters).
